Dry winter cold = static and flyaway hair. Annoying, but it can be counteracted. Here are our best tips!
How can this be counteracted?
Moisturize:
- Wash your hair less often and choose a sulfate-free shampoo, such as Organic Moisture Gentle Shampoo from Björn Axén, which cleanses gently.
- Remember conditioner; it restores the hair's moisture balance and acts as a protective layer that smooths the cuticle and wraps the hair in a thin film.
- Use a leave-in conditioner or a hair oil (e.g., argan or jojoba) to lock in moisture, and treat your hair to a mask once a week.
Environment and Habits
- Avoid excessively hot showers; heat strips the skin of its natural oils.
- If you have a humidifier at home, now is the time to use it; dry indoor air is a major culprit.
The right tools make all the difference
Silk is the best material for static hair. Sleep on a silk pillowcase to prevent frizz and retain the natural oils in your hair (and skin!)
Replace nylon hair ties with silk ones.
Use an acetate or metal comb - plastic creates friction and static electricity.
Antistatic products
Use an anti-static spray for your hair, e.g., No Frizz Instant De-Frizzer from Living Proof or Hairstay from KMS.
Apply a small amount of styling cream, serum, or oil after styling to keep flyaway hair in place. Our favorites are Extra Strength Dream Coat from Color WOW and Algae Hair Conditioner from Nanoil.

Run a little hand cream or lip balm through your hair for an instant fix.
